Govt is planning to introduce bill for quota to SC/STs in promotions. This was announced by Minister of state for PMO V Narayansamy at the Upper House. He said that the bill will be brought in this regard on August 22 after an all-party meeting, which will discuss the issue on August 21.
The Lok Sabha was totally disrupted minutes after convening today as members vociferously demanded that government bring a Constitution amendment bill for reservation in promotion of SCs and STs in jobs. In the Lok Sabha, SP and BSP members trooped to the Well as soon as the House met for the day demanding reservation for SC/STs in promotions in government jobs.
The move comes three months after the Supreme Court ruling that the reservation-based promotions for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in government jobs were unconstitutional. Supreme Court had set aside the 2008 decision of then Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh to provide reservation benefits for SCs, STs and OBCs in promotions.
